Hellebore




I have just managed to complete this ~hellebore which ~I have been looking at for quite a while, hoping to have a go. Drawing flowers brings up a frustration for me, a juxtaposition between wanting to bring out the detail and loving a more free flowing style which I used at the end to fill in the background. I love the sense of flow. Yet ~I long to recreate the beauty of the flower and always feel I fall short.
When I came to photograph it I was struck by the difference in quality with the kitchen door open  to let in more natural light. The picture looked brighter and more vibrant. I felt more pleased with it then.

 I drew this pastel of the wonderful, happy Arto and am so delighted to see it framed and know that this sweet and precious dog has been rescued and will now have the happiest life. There is something lovely when a dog looks at you and you look at a dog and you see each other. I have not met these dogs in person but feel there is so much to be discovered when you look in their eyes and see their beauty, even in a photo. Annie

 I was asked to draw this beautiful graceful dog, Annie. I was not sure I would be able to capture her likeness especially as her fur has tiny dark flecks in it, not easy to convey, but as with all my art, I never know if I can until I try. It was a joy to work with my favourite pastels and so very pleased with the result. Just after I had finished, I was paralysed by noise and was unable to move my hands and feet. It is incredibly wonderful to find moments of artistic expression are possible in a sea of unending pain and such frequent total inability to move. There is something truly wonderful about creating something beautiful that did  not previously exist. I find the process awesome and inspiring as well as challenging me to grow.

Chico, amazing ears!

I have struggled with bad daily paralysis all month and yet longed to get some aspect of  the sweetness of this lovely dog who is sad and needing a new home.  My fingers work very little of  the time, are extremely weak and numb yet hurt at the same time and are periodically, daily, paralysed.  It is my joy to try and draw a dog in moments when my mind, fine control of my hands and my coordination come together. It is not frequent enough and so unpredictable and erratic. Chico is a PennyPaws Romanian rescue dog and hoping he can find the right people to love him forever.
